Submit Biological Records

If you find something interesting or rare please let us know via the SLEF Submit Record facility below. Report should contain a minimum of: Your Name, What, Where, When plus any addtional information you have. A grid reference, preferably from a GPS unit would be very useful.

Records will be filtered by an officer of SLEF, for local use, and also forwarded to the Highland Biological Recording Group who will add it to local and national databases.

The Biological Record - Essential Information

  1. Please enter the following essential information. This basic data amounts to what, when, where and by whom.
  2. English should only be used where the name is absolutely unambiguous. English is usually acceptable for vertebrates, butterflies, some moths, dragonflies, some plants, and a very few other groups. Latin should be used wherever possible.

  3. Place names should be at the settlement / loch / mountain / valley scale

  4. A minimum 6-figure (100m) NGR is preferred. In extremis, postcodes may be used, and in some cases the NGR may be derived from the place name. If both place and NGR are given, there is a check for errors.

  5. If you are having trouble obtaining a NGR, try this handy tool to get a rough one.
  6. This may allow necessary follow-up checks to be made.

  7. The determiner is vital, as many species cannot be identified by non-specialists. An experienced determiner usually means a reliable record, but if the determiner is not known to be a specialist he/she may have to be contacted or the record discarded.
