Posted on

Dr James Merryweather, a former trustee of the Skye and Lochalsh Environment, is one of the UK's most experienced experts on ferns. In the latest video from his 'Auchtertyre Academy' James presents a fascinating guide to identifying Britain's ferns, many of which are found in Scotland. It is believed that there are more than 60 species of of which there are 37 common ferns.

Pteridology is the study of ferns and related plants, where ferns are a group of vascular plants that reproduce through spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. The main difference between mosses and ferns is these fern have specialised tissue that conduct water and nutrients.
